Preparations

Short thoughts by Mary Tilton

Tilton Head Shot

I have had about 6 months to prepare for deployment to Antarctica, but it seems like I have been preparing the most in the few weeks leading up to it. Due to the government shutdown, we weren’t sure we were even going to be deployed, so it put preparations on hiatus. Now we are so fortunate to be going. It has been a little stressful getting luggage, appropriate clothing, and other necessities purchased and packed, but everything has worked out very well for the last week. Packing two bags for two different kinds of weather has been difficult, but The US Antarctic Program (USAP) and Dr. Klein have prepared me very well for this trip so far.

I love traveling to new places, so this trip is a wonderful opportunity! In fact, all of the places we are stopping on the way to Antarctica, I have never been. I am thrilled to have been given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help with research and am so excited to leave this week for this adventure!
